With the heartworm association of America now recommending that Dogs have a year round heartworm preventative we need a source of cheap heartworm medicine. Heartworm medicine for Dogs comes in many forms and we need to choose the right one. We have a lot of choices so what is the best and the cheapest?

Firstly one of the easiest ways to save money is to do a price comparison. Pick a few sites, both well known and slightly more obscure, and compare the prices. Quite often you will be surprised to find that the most well known sites do not always carry the best prices.

Never just assume that because it is a popular site that is has good deals. Shop around and you can make considerable savings.

After we have done this we should decide what to purchase. To make the price cheap we can purchase generic frontline. The most popular generic has the same active ingredient as Heartgard but for half the price. It will prevent heartworm in the same manner and is a popular choice for those wishing to protect their pets on a budget.

The popular generic may not have a tasty flavor but it works just as well. It is a very effective way to save money each month without putting your pets health at risk. Combined with price comparisons there is a substantial amount of money to be saved by doing this. Generics are so cheap because all the testing and clearance of the product has been done by someone else. The makers do not have to pay for expensive research they simply sell the active ingredient after it has already been cleared for use.

This is a very good way to get cheap heartworm medicine.

Canine Heartworms – What All Dog Owners Need to Know

Heart worms, technically known as Dirofilaria immitis, are small parasites that often infect their host through a mosquito bite and then spread from one animal to another. All sorts of animals can get heartworms, including common pets like dogs, cats, and ferrets. Several wild animals, like coyotes, wolves, and even sea lions, are affected by heartworms and sometimes people can become infected by the parasites as well. It is important to protect your dog from canine heartworm infection.

The small parasite is placed into a host animal’s bloodstream through a single mosquito bite. After being bitten, the worm will grow inside the host for almost seven months before becoming an adult. Heartworms gained their name because once they mature, they infect the heart of the host animal, living there for years until they are either removed by extensive medical treatments or cause heart failure and kill the host.

Heart worms are quite common among dogs, especially in the United States. This sometimes fatal disease was discovered in 1856 and it was found that the parasites live primarily in the animal’s major blood vessels and, finally, within the heart. Canine heartworms, if left untreated, can cause serious problems in the heart’s process and can block the flow of blood through the animal’s blood vessels. Weight loss, vision complications, respiratory problems, chronic coughing, heart failure, and, finally, death are also associated with heartworm infections.

Heart worms affect different dogs in various ways and in many dogs, symptoms of the infection are not apparent until the disease is almost impossible to cure. It is very important to catch a canine heartworm infection early on or, better yet, to protect your dog from becoming infected with a monthly precautionary treatment recommended by your veterinarian.

Your vet will first perform a simple blood test on your dog to see if any heartworm parasites have already taken residence. If the test shows positive results, your dog will have to go through a long, often painful, treatment to get rid of the heartworms. Canine heartworm treatment can sometimes include surgical procedures as well. If the test returns negative results and your dog is free of heartworms, the monthly preventive treatments can be administered.

Early Symptoms

There are several warning signs that your dog may have contracted canine heartworms. Contacting your vet about any of the following symptoms as soon as they are noticed could save your dog’s life.

Unusual tiredness that can not be explained

Frequent coughing that is unusual

Hunting dogs that often fall behind or drop out completely from tiredness

Unusual panting for no apparent reason

Rare symptoms include jaundice, complications with vision, and convulsions

Sudden, unexplained weight loss is a symptom that often occurs shortly before the dog dies from canine heartworms

What Breeds are Affected by Canine Heart Worms?

It was once believed that short-haired breeds were more easily infected by heartworms. The reasoning behind this was because the parasite bearing mosquitoes that infect the dog have a very hard time biting a long-haired dog through the extra hair.

It was later discovered that mosquitoes actually bite canines in the stomach area where the hair is fine. With this knowledge, it is now known that all types of dogs are susceptible to the canine heartworm disease. It is also common for dogs to suffer from mosquito bites on their ears or their mouth and nose because these areas typically have little hair as well.

How Are Canine Heart Worms Treated?

When a canine heartworm infection is noticed early, a series of chemical treatments can be used to treat the disease. These treatments are administered over an extended period so the worms are killed slowly, rather than all at once. The dead heartworms remain in the dog’s body and usually take several weeks to be absorbed. Too many of these carcasses can create serious, often deadly, complications. Any type of chemical therapy can be dangerous to your dog as well if it is not handled by a professionally licensed veterinarian. Always allow your vet to perform these procedures and follow his instructions closely.

Surgery is sometimes a practical remedy for a dog infected with canine heartworms. Talk with your vet about the various options available for curing your dog and decide on the one you are most comfortable with.

Canine Heart Worm Recovery and Prevention

After a chemical heartworm treatment, it is very important for your dog to take it easy and not become overexerted. Too much activity can cause the dead heartworms to fall into the lungs, resulting in breathing difficulties and most often death. Keep your dog comfortable and relaxed for several weeks to allow the dead worms to be absorbed.

It was once recommended that dogs recovering from canine heartworm infections be given aspirin to speed the healing process and lessen damage to the heart. The American Heartworm Society now urges dog owners to refrain from using aspirin during recovery. It could cause adverse reactions to the chemicals and there is no proven medical evidence of the benefits of aspirin for heartworm recovery.

Canine heartworm prevention medications are a great way to protect your dog from heartworms. These treatments don’t stop the infection.

Rather, the drug produces a chemical that affects the heartworm parasite early, preventing the worms from becoming adults and killing them before they infect the heart. Heartworm prevention treatments are over 99 percent effective when used correctly. Most of the cases of failure were due to irregular usage.

Treatments that prevent canine heartworms are given each month during mosquito season, beginning as soon as mosquitoes start to appear. The treatments should be continued until a month after mosquito season is over for the best results. Dogs living in warm, moist climates, especially near the Gulf Coast or tropical areas, should be given the treatments year round because mosquitoes are common in every season.

These preventive canine heartworm medications can cause severe, often fatal, complications if your dog is already infected with the parasite. For this reason, it is very important for your dog’s safety that you consult with a veterinarian before starting any sort of heartworm treatments. Regular blood tests, along with an appropriate preventive treatment, can protect your dog from the dangers posed by canine heartworms.

Your veterinarian can provide the most assistance in keeping your dog free of heartworms. It is often hard to notice the symptoms of canine heartworm infection until it has caused serious problems. Scheduling regular blood work for your dog can help you catch these parasites before it is too late. Ask your vet about the best type of heartworm prevention treatments for your dog as well.

A final point to remember if you want to prevent canine heartworms from plaguing your dog is to do your best to protect him from the heartworm parasite carriers, mosquitoes. It is especially important to take precautionary measures during warm seasons when mosquitoes are prevalent and in areas with a large number of mosquitoes.

Canine heartworms are often difficult to detect, especially in the early stages, so even though your dog appears healthy and sound, he could still be infected. Have your dog checked regularly by your vet.

What is Alternative Heartworm Treatment For Dogs?

Heartworm infection in dogs is an extremely serious but preventable disease. If heartworms are left untreated, they can kill their host (i.e. your beloved pooch).

What is Alternative Heartworm Treatment For Dogs?

Heartworm infection in dogs is an extremely serious but preventable disease. If heartworms are left untreated, they can kill their host (i.e. your beloved pooch). Heartworms are parasites that are transmitted from animal to animal by mosquitoes. Let’s look at why these deadly parasites are so dangerous and then we’ll look at alternative heartworm treatment for dogs.

Deadly parasites

Heartworms get their name because the adult worms actually live inside the right side of your pet’s heart. They can also inhabit the pulmonary arteries in his or her lungs. These worms are very thin but can grow to be up to 30cm long. Imagine the impact this must have on your dog’s health when it has a collection of 30cm worms living inside its heart and lungs!

Heartworm infection symptoms can start out being as innocuous as lethargy, coughing and shortness of breath. It’s not surprising to learn that they go on to cause swollen abdomens and bulging chests, convulsions, diarrhea and vomiting. If untreated, they eventually cause heart failure or fatal clotting in those pulmonary arteries.

Standard treatment for heartworm disease

If your dog is unlucky enough to get infected by heartworms that then go onto become adults and attach themselves to your dog’s heart and lungs, then he has heartworm disease. Preventative measures to avoid this happening will have failed by this point.

Your vet will most likely prescribe chemical insecticides to kill off the adult worms and all their larvae. Due to the serious nature of heartworm infection, and the possible complications involved, please follow your veterinarian’s treatment instruction if your dog has been diagnosed with heartworm disease.

Alternative heartworm treatment for dogs

Although they do kill off the adult and larvae heartworms, these insecticides are pretty toxic for your dog. So as responsible pet owners you want to avoid having to use them as much as possible. The key here is prevention. We want to use herbal treatments to minimize the chances of heartworm infection. We want to do this as much as possible for any dog who is likely to be exposed to mosquitoes.

So what are we going to do? Here are two steps that you can take:

1. Use a herbal formula that will reduce the likelihood of mosquito bites whilst it eliminates any larval stage heartworms.

2. Use a herbal spray that will help to repel the mosquitoes from your dog’s fur.

Alternative heartworm treatment for dogs should focus on preventing the heartworms from getting into your dog’s body in the first place.

Follow these two steps consistently throughout mosquito season and you will help to minimize the chances of your dog getting heartworm disease. Make sure that your dog still gets tested regularly though as there is no foolproof way to prevent heartworm infection.

Natural Heartworm Treatment or Conventional Heartworm Treatment?

Heartworm is parasitic worm that can grow to be twelve inches or longer, and left untreated, will kill your pet. Heartworm is primarily a canine disease but cats can be infected as well. Heartworm is a serious, life-threatening disease requiring painful conventional treatment once infection has occurred. Herbal heartworm treatments and other natural heartworm treatments are certainly available, though less well known. Although these natural heartworm treatment regimes are nowhere near as painful or risky as conventional heartworm treatments, recovery from well established heartworm can be very uncomfortable for your pet.

Infected mosquitoes transmit heartworm. And once a mosquito is infected, whenever the mosquito bites another animal, heartworm is spread. Although heartworm is not contagious, it is certainly possible, and relatively common, that more than one animal in the household can contract heartworm. This is obviously because an infected mosquito is likely to bite more than one of your pets, and/or if there is one infected mosquito in or around your yard, there are very likely to be more of them. There is no risk, however, to housing a heartworm positive dog with an uninfected animal, as there is no risk of direct infection from the infected dog to an uninfected animal.

Heartworm is a parasitic problem common to dogs (and other pets) in warmer climates. Heartworm is therefore prevalent in southern France, Spain, Italy and the Mediterranean, as well as to a greater or lesser extent in every State in the U.S., and countries as far flung as Australia and Hong Kong. In fact, some experts believe that heartworm is now present on every continent of this planet, with the exception of Antarctica. While that may be, heartworm is as yet relatively unknown in the U.K. and some other cooler climactic areas. There does appear to be a growing awareness of the problem, but many people have very little knowledge of how heartworm is spread, and why preventative medications are so important.

Heartworm is caused by the bite of a mosquito and the adult heartworm is found in the right ventricle and the nearby blood vessels of the dog’s heart. Heartworm is a disease that every dog that is ever exposed to mosquitoes is susceptible to.

Symptoms of heartworm disease usually include coughing, weight loss, lack of energy and breathing difficulties. However, during the early stages of infestation, there may be few, if any, symptoms. Indeed, heartworm can develop to a very advanced stage before your pet shows any symptoms at all. This is one of the reasons why a heartworm diagnosis is such a serious matter – by the time your pet is diagnosed, he or she is likely to have a mass of heartworm clogging up his/her heart and surrounding blood vessels.

Heartworm can be diagnosed with blood tests, and/or X-rays, as well as various other types of tests. Heartworm testing will only be carried out as a matter of course in areas where heartworm is prevalent. However, you have every right to request that your pet be tested for heartworm, and to expect your vet to adhere to your wishes in this regard.

Heartworm is a completely preventable disease. Do not ignore your vet when he or she tells you that heartworm prevention is important for your dog. It IS. In fact, it can literally save your dog’s life, or at the very least, save your dog from an expensive and painful treatment regime.

The heartworm prevention your vet will recommend will likely be one of the well known brands such as Heartgard. Such preventative medications do work very well, but then again, so do natural alternatives such as herbs.

Heartworms in Dogs Must Be Treated Early

Heartworms in dogs in one of the most dangerous conditions that a dog can get. The worms can block a dog’s blood vessels and badly damage the heart. The infected dog can have all types of symptoms: weight loss, shortness of breath, chronic cough, heart failure, and then, death.

Unfortunately, by the time these symptoms are noticed, it’s too late to cure most dogs. Treatment must be started as soon as possible so watch for the following signs:

1. Your dog coughs frequently without any apparent reason. This cough is different than the "kennel cough" that some dogs get when you adopt them from the dog pound.

2. Your dog seems to tire easily with very little activity. He is gasping for breath and he will be panting almost constantly.

3. When you walk with your dog, he can’t keep up with you and needs to rest more often. He will often just lie down and stay down even when you call him to get up.

4. Your dog’s weight has dropped dramatically. By the time you notice her weight loss, it is usually too late for treatment.

5. By the time your dog has reached the end of her life, she is convulsing and has vision problems.

You can now see why a dog must be treated, but how did he get heartworms in the first place? From mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes feed on the blood of the dog around the muzzle, the ears, and on the stomach where there is the least amount of hair. They infect the dog while they are feeding on the dog’s blood.

Treatments are almost as dangerous as the heartworms themselves. The chemicals that are used must be very strong to be effective.

There are two ways to go with chemical treatments. The first is by smaller dozes given over a longer period of time. This isn’t quite as dangerous as giving just one massive dose when a large amount of chemical is given. If the heartworms all die at once, the corpses travel through to the dog’s lungs. This would cause immediate death.

Treatment should never be given by anyone other than a highly qualified veterinarian.

There are also drugs available for heartworm prevention. These drugs kill them before they get to the adult stage. Dogs can still get infected during mosquito season but they don’t develop heartworms.

Preventative drugs can’t ever be given to dogs that already have heartworms. Only a veterinarian can determine if a dog is already infected with them. Blood tests can show if a dog has the problem and to what degree.

You should make sure that your dog has a protected place to sleep during mosquito season. Bring him or her into the house, garage or a screened porch. Mosquito repellent is also available but it’s not very effective.

Take your dog to the vet for frequent checkups so that heartworm infestation can be caught before it gets a good foothold. The veterinarian will be able to see the symptoms long before you do.

Heartworm in dogs can be treated, but treatment must be started as soon as possible.

Safe and Effective Interceptor For Heartworm For Dogs

Interceptor for heartworm for dogs is easy to administer because it comes in a flavor tab pill. As heartworm disease is common to most dogs, several companies have manufactured interceptors to help treat this common problem. This is generically known as Milbemycin Oxime and is given once a month to help prevent heartworm in your dogs.

Once you’ve noticed symptoms of heartworm in your dog, you must take him or her to the vet right away. It is important that heartworm testing be done before administering any preventive therapy. Also, if you know of any allergies that your dog might have, it is best to inform your veterinarian right away so that precautionary measures can be taken.

Today, interceptors come in various forms such as chewable flavor tab to help make it easier for the dog to intake them. Aside from heartworm, interceptors have been known to also treat hookworm, whipworm, and roundworm. Aside from that, interceptors are also an effective way to control and eliminate ascarid in dogs.

To administer the interceptor, you have two options: you can either give it directly to the dog’s mouth or serve it in portions of food. In taking this medicine should be done once a month at regular intervals. But again, before starting any monthly interceptor regimen, you have to be sure that your dog has undergone necessary heartworm infection testing.

Aside from that, it is important to consult with your veterinarian as this will help determine which specific interceptor heartworm is right for your pet. Failing to do so could lead to dangerous side effects in your pet. If you should consult; ask some important questions such as the exact dosage to be given to your pet. Among the harmful side effects your dog can get include drowsiness, depression, vomiting, and diarrhea, loss of appetite, hyper salivation, weakness, and seizures.

If your dog weighs about 2 to 10 pounds, the safe dosage of interceptor is 2.3mg. For dogs weighing between 11 to 25 pounds, they will need 5.75mg of interceptor; 26 to 50 pound dogs would need 11.5mg; and lastly, 51 to 100-pound dogs would need 23mg. If you happen to overdose on the administering of the medicine, better seek medical help as soon as you can to prevent further health damage on your dog.

Now, if you’re asking is there any other heartworm pill medication aside from interceptors? Actually, there really isn’t much difference with interceptors and those other medicines aside from ingredients and pill form. There are basically four types of pill medication for heartworm that dogs can intake orally: heartgard plus, iverhart plus, sentinel, and interceptor. But interceptors have been known to be most effective since it has Milbemycin Oxime which also treats other infections other than heartworm.

Certain medications can make their claim but you have to consult with your veterinarian on which specific worm issue your dog is suffering from and that’s when you pick out a corresponding medication to help treat that. However, interceptor for heartworm for dogs are a proven way to deal with this kind of infection and when followed on a strict monthly treatment regimen.

Monthly use of heartworm medications for dogs can prevent this disease for the life of your pet. Effective preventive medications are available as spot on products (Revolution), tasty wafers (Heartgard), or flavored tablets (Sentinel and Interceptor). Some, like Heartgard, focus only on prevention of heartworm disease while other products have added benefits of killing roundworms, hookworms and fleas.

Treatment is available for dogs suffering heartworm disease but is an expensive option that is easily avoided. The treatment is straightforward with the goal of destroying the parasites living in the animal but treating dogs with severe cases of the disease or with other health problems can be challenging.

The number of worms present in the animal indicates the severity of the disease but the activity level of the dog also plays an important role. As the heartworms die they decompose and the fragments can lodge in pulmonary arteries and block blood flow. This blood flow increases during period of physical activity which can increase the chances of clogged arteries that potentially can cause heart failure. Dogs undergoing treatment must be restricted or confined to prevent high levels of activity that could increase blood flow.

The only approved heartworm disease treatment for dogs is Melarsomine. For years the treatment protocol consisted of two injections 24 hours apart. Results of recent studies have led to changes in the way Melarsomine is administered.

The three dose system currently recommended is composed of one injection followed at least one month later by two more injections 24 hours apart. This is the treatment recommended by the American Heartworm Society and a recent development in treatment of the problem.

One shortfall with the previous two dose treatment is that Melarsomine may not kill heartworms that are less than four months old. A dog testing positive for this parasitic disease probably has worms that range from less than one month to seven years old in his body.

When a dog tests positive your veterinarian may advise the use of Heartgard medication for 2-3 months prior to administering Melasaromine. The goal is to prevent development of young heartworms so that the aggressive treatment will be more effective.

Your veterinarian will assess the overall health of your canine before administering treatment for heartworm disease. Melasaromine acts as a poison (arsenic) to kill the parasites in your dog’s body and any additional health problems could endanger your pet. Treatment for dogs is similar to chemotherapy for humans. Clearly you don’t want to expose your dog to aggressive treatment if you can prevent the disease with a monthly medication.

Dogs with other health complications may not be able to tolerate the standard treatment for dogs. An alternative therapy of ivermectin and doxycycline weekly for 36 weeks greatly reduces the number of heartworms in the animal. Administering doxycycline for a four week period every four months keeps heartworm at low levels in the animal.

In extreme cases the diagnosis is not made until the dog suffers a life threatening heart problem. This may be indicated by sudden onset of severe weakness and lethargy. The cause is heartworms obstructing blood flow through a heart valve and interfering with the closing of that valve. The only course of treatment is surgery to remove the majority of worms from the dog’s heart. This is accomplished using a tool inserted in the jugular vein. If the surgery is successful, the standard heartworm treatment will eliminate any remaining heartworms.

There is no reason your pet should need to undergo drastic surgery or suffer the side effects of chemotherapy for heartworm disease. Heartworm medication for dogs is readily available through your veterinarian and can also be purchased at a cost effective online site specializing in canine medicines.

Twelve doses of Heartgard, Sentinel, Revolution or Interceptor each year will fully protect your best friend from heartworm disease the damage it can cause. Ask your vet to test your dog for heartworm and buy preventive heartworm medicine for dogs at a reputable online pet pharmacy.

What is the Best Heartworm Medicine For Dogs?

As a proud and loving pet dog owner, for sure, you are now aware of the dangers the heartworm disease it poses. But do you know where heartworm came from? Do you any idea where to find the best and affordable heartworm medicine for dogs? You care about your dog, that’s for sure and it’s only appropriate enough that you should give some time and sweat and financial investment to find the right medicine before something worse can happen to your buddy.

First of all, heartworms come from mosquitoes. They are responsible for passing these parasites to your dog and almost all other animals, for that matter, from cats, cows, bats, bears and many more. But of all animals, dogs are more prone to this kind of disease, regardless of their age, locale or breed or sex. Now, imagine what would your reaction be if your cute, innocent and expensive Shih Tzu puppy was later diagnosed with heartworm because of the evident symptoms like loss of appetite, rapid lose of weight, arthritic disease, almost blurred vision, not as enthusiastic or hyperactive as before or loss of lots of fur? It would sure be very devastating for your heart to see her suffering in its tender age. How about an elderly Doberman who used to be very enthusiastic and excited to walk through the park with you every afternoon and you discovered one day that’s its health is deteriorating because of heartworms?

The most painful and saddest fact about heartworm is, you can never tell if your pet has these parasites, not until you can see some of these symptoms. In dealing with heartworms, you have to think of the word "prevention" 100% rather than "cure".

Prevention is not the same as treatment or cure because of this. There are many kinds of preventive and precautionary measures like pills, topical creams, or chewable while treatment are a combination of pills, injections or your pet becoming an in-patient in your local vet clinic or animal hospital.

Here are some of the preventive medicines that can help you and your dog win the war against heartworms. Iverhart Plus is a prescription drug and they taste like pork liver. Usually, a veterinary doctor will ask you to give this medicine once a month to prevent the growth and abundance of heartworms in your dog. It’s also best to give to dogs to prevent other kinds of parasites like hookworm or roundworm. But bear in mind, it’s a preventive medicine but you should really ask the doctor about it for there are some allergic reactions to this and it might even compromise your dog’s health more. He might even die in your own hands rather than in heartworms and other parasites.

Then, there are also some unflavored pills like Heartgard, then, another medicine approved by FDA is Interceptor. Another type which targets fully-grown heartworms in dogs is what they call "Immiticide" which contains melarsomine, an arsenic-based element.

These are just some of the medicines that are effective in getting rid of heartworms in dogs but then, again, you have to put in mind that medicines, if not taken properly or without any doctor’s consent or prescription can endanger your lovely pet’s health. It’s important you should try to read first more about them and the best suggested thing you can do is go online to read more about how to eliminate heartworms.

As a final note, the bottom line is, no matter what heartworm medicine for dogs you want to choose, always take in consideration that your pet’s health is still your greatest priority. If you go online, not only you will find some helpful information regarding what best medicine to choose but you might also get that right medicine instantly which can be possibly affordable. Remember, the quality of care you give to your pet is not based on the price but based on the love and care you’re giving to him.

Dog Heartworm Medicine

Preventative dog heartworm medicine is available in three methods of administration; injection, oral and spot on or topical treatment. Each method has its fans and critics, but all when used correctly guarantee your dog is no longer at risk from heartworm disease.

Dog Heartworm Injection
Heartworm injections are widely used overseas, but health scares have made them the least favoured option in the United States. These heartworm preventatives must be given every year or every six months by a qualified veterinarian. If you are considering such a method of heartworm prevention speak to your vet.

Dog Heartworm Pills
Most often used to prevent heartworm for dogs are oral dog heartworm medicines. Available as ordinary (and relatively cheap) tablets, or as tasty chewables (which are more expensive), heartworm pills used to be given daily, but are now more usually used every thirty days.

Monthly oral heartworm medicines for dogs are widely available in generic versions. Their less glamourous packaging does nothing to diminish the effectiveness of the product, and can provide savings of up to 50% on the more expensive branded heartworm meds.

Canine heartworm pills work by destroying any larval heartworms which have been picked up from an infected mosquito bite. They do not prevent the parasites infecting your pet, but rather work backwards ensuring those parasites never mature to the point where they can cause any health concerns for the dog.

Some dogs are notoriously difficult to give tablets too. If your pet is one such animal, you can simply break up and hide the heartworm pill in its food. But, keep an eye on it to ensure the whole tablet has been eaten. Alternatively, chewable heartworm medicines are available. Only suitable for dogs which are okay with beef, these treats make medication time much more acceptable to your pet. They are designed to be eaten slowly though, so if your dog is one who likes to swallow things whole, give it only a part of the chewable heartworm medication at a time.

Topical Canine Heartworm Medicine
Topical or spot on treatments have grown in popularity as pet owners regularly use such products for the prevention of fleas. There is no issue of wondering whether your dog has swallowed the medication, which puts the pet owner in more control.

Topical dog heartworm medicines also incorporate the control of other parasites. Roundworms, hookworms and other intestinal worms are controlled with most topical products. In addition using a product such as Advantage Multi or Revolution heartworm medicine for dogs can offer thorough flea control too.

Using Dog Heartworm Medicine
Whichever type of heartworm medicine for dogs you choose, there are a few points to remember.

Prior to starting a preventative heartworm treatment, your dog should receive a heartworm test from your vet. It is advisable to repeat this test each spring to ensure your dog does not need any veterinary treatment.

Monthly heartworm medicine for dogs really should be given every 30 days. The active ingredients are completely efficient at destroying all juvenile heartworm larvae that have been in the dogs system for 30 days or less. As time elapses, some medications are better than others at eliminating more mature heartworms. For the forgetful pet owner, ivermectin based products such as Heartgard heartworm pills are the most efficient at still destroying all heartworms. If you miss a dose, use your dog heartworm medicine as soon as possible, and continue to use every 30 days from this new date. If more than two months has elapsed since the last dose, speak to your vet about the need for an additional heartworm test.

When changing from one type or brand to another, make sure the new monthly heartworm medicine is given 30 days after the last treatment.

Saving Money on Your Dog’s Heartworm Medicine
Heartworm medicine for dogs is fast becoming a standard, regular pet medication used by most pet owners. Ideally it should be given year round, but some pet owners make savings by using only in the warmer months when mosquitoes are most active. If you are considering seasonal use of heartworm preventatives speak to your vet about the risk of the disease in your area.

Perhaps a safer way to save money on heartworm medicines is to choose wisely. Chewables are more expensive than ordinary tablets. Generic tablets are cheaper still than brands. Buying from a Canadian online pet medicine outlet may avoid the need for a veterinary prescription and the costs associated with it.

Price check, as discount pet medicines vary hugely and often the largest retailers offer the smallest savings.

There is a huge range of dog heartworm medicine available. As long as you choose a product labelled as a preventative heartworm treatment for dogs, you are protecting your pet. Though each product is different, all must provide the same, safe protection from disease to be labelled as a heartworm preventative.
